Man Utd boss Ten Hag ‘can block’ Sir Jim Ratcliffe from completing 3 transfers

Jim Ratcliffe's potential Man Utd investment assessed | Football Digest

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is looking to close a deal that would see him purchase a 25 per cent stake in Manchester United and is likely to be put in charge of the sporting side of the club, including being responsible for future transfer plans. However, head coach Erik ten Hag believes he will retain the power to block any incoming transfers, which could lead to the pair clashing behind the scenes should there be a disagreement regarding recruitment. Here, Express Sport has looked at three potential Ratcliffe signings that Ten Hag may veto.

Jean-Clair Todibo

Jean-Clair Todibo has impressed in Ligue 1 with Nice, the other side that Ratcliffe currently owns. It is likely that the British billionaire has been left with a positive impression of the centre-back, while United themselves have also been linked with the Frenchman as Ten Hag has gone in search of reinforcements at the back.

However, United had the opportunity to move for the 23-year-old defender in the past two windows but instead prioritised the chance to sign Benjamin Pavard from Bayern Munich instead.

He opted for Inter Milan after the Red Devils failed to raise the necessary funds by selling Harry Maguire, but Ten Hag’s preference to sign Pavard as opposed to Todibo may suggest that he holds a different view than Ratcliffe and would oppose that signing.

Casemiro replacement

According to the Guardian, Ratcliffe questioned United’s recent transfer policy and identified the signing of Casemiro as an example of deals that he would like to outlaw. He pointed out that Casemiro at 30, coming in for £70million, as something that he takes issue with and coupled with the Brazilian’s dip in form – Ratcliffe could look to land a younger midfielder as a replacement.

But Ten Hag was keen to bring in Casemiro and has made him a mainstay of the team after failing to convince Frenkie De Jong to move to Old Trafford, he could disagree with the idea that ousting Casemiro from the team is a priority and could instead veto that plan and focus on other areas of improvement.

Khephren Thuram

One midfielder that Ratcliffe may have an eye on as a potential Casemiro replacement is Khephren Thuram, who plays alongside Todibo for Ratcliffe’s Nice. He was set for a Premier League move this summer before an injury scuppered that plan, but has been a mainstay for the team once again as they sit third in the table.

But with Ten Hag keen to keep Casemiro in the team, splashing out to sign midfielder Mason Mount and also loaning in Sofyan Amrabat with the option to purchase, he may disagree with Ratcliffe that Thuram is necessary.
