Holger Rune blasts ‘s*** show’ as Andrey Rublev explodes at UTS

There was drama at the Ultimate Tennis Showdown on Sunday when Andrey Rublev exploded at the end of the second quarter of his semi-final against Holger Rune. There was some confusion over whether he tried to use his cheat card allowing the next point he won to be worth three points. After a lengthy delay it was Rune who won the quarter to lead 2-0 before he claimed it had been a “s*** show”.

Rublev and Rune were contesting the first of the two semi-finals at the UTS Grand Final, where players compete to win as many points as possible across four eight-minute-long quarters. It was the Dane who won the first quarter and the second one went down to the wire when the score was all square at 11-11 when the clock ran out.

But Rublev was left fuming as he claimed that he played his bonus card, which means that the player adds three points to their tally if they win the next exchange. It caused a lengthy delay as the world No 5 stormed over to the umpire, the supervisor and even tournament founder Patrick Mouratoglou to plead his case while Rune also approached the chair official.

But it didn’t work as the umpire eventually called the score as 11-11 again before giving Rublev a time violation for continuing to refuse to play. The Russian then tried to catch Rune out and attempted to serve when the 20-year-old was in discussion with the umpire.
