Tyson Fury praises Tom Aspinall after winning UFC heavyweight title
Rap superstar Drake lost a whopping £250,000 (£200,000) betting on Leon Edwards to knock out Colby Covington at UFC 296 in Las Vegas. The ‘One Dance’ singer has a history of betting against Covington and previously backed the American to lose to Jorge Masvidal.
The Canadian music star bet last year on Covington’s rival to beat him but lost out on adding to his fortune in that instance. Drake tried again to outdo the bookmakers last night, hoping for a knockout by Edwards this time but he was left disappointed yet again as Edwards was taken the five-round distance.
After beating Masvidal, Covington even teased Drake about losing money, with his delight having been palable. He said: “Let’s talk about all the money that Drake lost tonight, he needs to go back to selling those s****y albums to get back the money.”
This time around, chart-topping hip hop favourite Drake showed his bet on Instagram, telling his 145 million fans he was backing Edwards to knock out the American fighter with a picture of his betting slip, alongside the caption : “Head shot please and thank you @leonedwardsmma.”
Edwards and his rival went head-to-head for five rounds, leading to a points decision to split them after a stalemate stand-off at T-Mobile Arena. The Brit eventually came out on top, dodging his opponent’s takedown attempts and scoring 49-46 across the cards to be crowned the winner.
This was another loss for Drake, who lost about $2million (£1.58m) on bets last year, including $500,000 (£394,000) on the Israel Adesanya vs Sean Strickland match. Edwards’ win also meant he kept his UFC welterweight title after beating his former interim champion rival in Nevada.
The fight was particularly important for Edwards, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt from Birmingham, who was upset by comments made by his opponent at the pre-match press conference. UFC CEO Dana White also criticised Covington’s remarks, after he said that Edwards’ late father was ‘in hell’ before the fight.

White commented: “It bothered everybody. What I say is true – we’re in the fight game and mean things are said, but the one thing I don’t like is when you start going after family. Whether it’s the kids, the wife, the parents, it’s just such a nasty thing to do.”
Edwards confessed: “It was hard [to keep control]. At the weigh-ins yesterday, I was fuming and shaking. After speaking to my mum and my coaches, we thought, ‘OK, just focus yourself. This is what he wants – he wants you to come out there, fight emotional and try and take you down.’
“Obviously what he said is [wrong] but let’s switch it all off, and go out there and do your job. This guy used my dad’s murder as entertainment. After the press conference, I was crying backstage because of the rage. You can’t use my dad’s death.”
